Emergency Sleeping Pods – Further Information

Guernsey Ports sent out further information regarding the Emergency Sleeping Pods:

Notice to Mooring Holders – Emergency Sleeping Pods Q&A

Thank you to those mooring holders who have responded in support of the initiative to site two emergency sleeping pods on the Salerie side of the QEII Marina. Please find below answers to some frequently asked questions, which may be of interest.

What measures are in place to ensure security for berth holders in the QEII Marina?
We do not anticipate there being any increase in security related incidents due to the installation of these pods. However, as of this week, additional high resolution fixed CCTV cameras have been installed across the entirety of the QEII Marina which includes the Salerie, to increase security surveillance more generally meaning there is now robust 24/7 coverage of access points to the pontoons.

How are the sleeping pods being funded?
Funding for the sleeping pods is by private donation, which has been arranged directly with the organising charity, Caritas. Guernsey Ports has not contributed financially to this initiative.

How are the sleeping pods kept clean and secure?
Each pod contains basic cleaning equipment for the users, and the pods are also serviced by a cleaning contractor (arranged by Caritas). The pods are locked and secured with a combination lock, the code for which is provided to the user by Caritas.

What is stopping anyone from just turning up and using the pods?
The pods are only for pre-arranged short-term emergency accommodation. Access codes are changed regularly, and the pods can only be used by prior arrangement with Caritas.

Further information about the initiative can be found on Caritas’ website.
